Suggestions for instructors teaching CALS Scenario-based hands-on stations
 Read and think about the station objectives. Plan conduct of the scenario to reinforce these objectives.
 This is simulation. The key to good simulation is the ability to put the student into a situation replicating, as much as possible, the real thing.
 Organize station and equipment simulating a patient care area as much as possible. Even small hospitals have equipment well organized and this is something we want to reinforce.
 Test equipment. If something doesn’t work and cannot be fixed — for example, a manikin won’t accept a King Airway – acknowledge it and work around it.
 Consider using props such as a monitor with rhythm generator to enhance realism and reflect patient condition.
 Consider removing chairs from these stations. They encourage passivity and lecturing
 Engage students one or two at a time. You can start a scenario with one or two nurses present, provider available by phone or unavailable. Provider and remainder of team can join the scenario at a later time. This gives everybody a chance to fully participate.
 Most rotation groups are too large or have too many of one type of provider to all do the scenario at the same time. This is one reason we usually have more than 1 scenario per station. Ask those not involved in the scenario to observe and give feedback. This keeps everyone engaged.
 Work through the case as much as possible in real time. For example, do not allow participants to stick an ET tube in the manikin’s mouth then say “now he’s intubated.” A procedure like RSI is a big deal in most rural hospitals and will take some time and attention. X rays take time to perform and make available. A urinary catheter in a peds patient will require using a reference to find the right size, etc.
 Ask participants to demonstrate using the manikin things like secondary survey, describe specifically what they’d be looking for, etc. This can seem awkward with a rubber dummy but less so if you focus on the task itself.Suggestions for interactive station instruction 6 27 15
